"Iron Man" gets heavy start at box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Iron Man," the latest Marvel comics title brought to the big screen, grossed an estimated $32.5 million from its first full day in North American theaters, independent box office analysts reported on Saturday.

That tally, generated from Friday showings in some 4,100 U.S. and Canadian cinemas, put "Iron Man" on track to meet or exceed the $85 million-plus opening weekends posted by sequels to two other Marvel franchises -- "Spider-Man" and "X-Men."

"Iron Man" stars Robert Downey Jr. as a billionaire industrialist and playboy named Tony Stark who wrestles with a midlife crisis as he invents a high-tech suit of armor that transforms him into a superhero.

The movie, which cost about $150 million to make and another $75 million to market, co-stars Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow and has drawn mostly favorable reviews.

Distributed through Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures, the film is the first self-financed production from Marvel Studios and is being closely watched as the first major release of the summer movie season.

The 18-weekend stretch from May through August can account for as much as 40 percent of Hollywood's total domestic box office receipts for a year.

Neither Paramount nor Marvel issued first-day figures for "Iron Man."

But two box office tracking services, Media By Numbers and Box Office Mojo, both reported the film's estimated Friday take at $32.5 million, not including receipts from Thursday night "preview" screenings in more than 2,000 theaters.

Ashlee Simpson, rocker Wentz expecting child

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Singer Ashlee Simpson and her husband, rocker Pete Wentz, are expecting their first child, the couple said on Wednesday.

"While many have speculated about this, we wanted to wait until after the first trimester to officially confirm that we are expecting our first child. This is truly the most joyous time in our lives and we are excited to share the happy news and start our family," the couple said in a message posted on the social networking Web site friendsorenemies.com.

Simpson and Wentz announced their engagement in April and married this month. They have been romantically linked since 2006.

Simpson, 23, released her third music album, "Bittersweet World," in April. She is the younger sister of singer and actress Jessica Simpson.

Wentz, 28, co-founded the band Fall Out Boy in 2001. The band has since built a loyal following with albums like its popular 2005 release "From Under the Cork Tree."

Pussycat Dolls - Pussycat Dolls Seek Help From Cruz

The PUSSYCAT DOLLS have enlisted the help of British singer/songwriter TAIO CRUZ to spice up their new album.

The girl group's lead singer Nicole Scherzinger has put her solo career on hold to concentrate on the band's second LP and they have called in Cruz to write them some songs.

Cruz, whose breakthrough single Come On Girl entered the U.K. music charts' top five in March (08), will be teaming up with the band at a recording studio in Los Angeles and admits he is determined to give their music a complete make-over.

He says, "I'm really excited about meeting the Pussycat Dolls. I've quite a few ideas bubbling away and I want to do something that will be a complete contrast to their usual style.

"Nicole has put her solo career on hold to concentrate on PCD so it's a really important album. Since Come On Girl, I've been receiving lots more calls about writing for people."

Ashlee Simpson & Pete Wentz's Secret Basement Honeymoon

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are spending their initial days as man and wife hiding out in a basement to avoid the paparazzi.

The newlyweds, who married in a secret ceremony in Encino, California on Saturday, told wedding guests they were heading off on honeymoon to "scramble" the media.

However, Mr and Mrs. Wentz are actually shacked up somewhere underground.

Wentz reveals: "We're in the basement of the house. We wanted everybody to think we were going on a honeymoon... We've got some blow-up palm trees down here... a little fake and bake tanning booth.

"It's gonna look like we went on a private jet somewhere and we're gonna save that $30,000.

"We're eating DiGiorno's pizza, getting into that tanning bed every once in a while, it's great."

Wentz and Simpson decided to try and fool everyone over their honeymoon when so many details of their wedding plans were leaked to the press.

The Fall Out Boy star says: "You can't trust anyone; people were letting out all kinds of details - we had a plan that we wanted to do it in San Diego and it completely got out so we had to do it in the most secure place that we could do it."
